ZHUANGWEI HAS A THREAD ON THE ARCH1101 FORUM THAT IS CALLED "ELEVATOR NOT HOLDING MY CHARACTER" ONE OF THE THINGS I SUGGESTED WAS TO USE AN ACTION IMPULSE NODE TO GIVE THE PLAYER A LITTLE SHOVE 10 TIMES A SECOND ... THIS FORCES THE GAME ENGINE TO UPDATE THE PHYSICS AND CAN HELP WITH YOUR PLAYER FALLING THROUGH THE ELEVATOR GEOMETRY.

YOU SHOULD ALSO CHECK THAT THE ELEVATOR ENTITY IS A BASIC PHYSICS ENTITY AND POSSIBLY SLOW IT DOWN A BIT ...

THIS IS IN RESPONSE TO A COUPLE OF THREADS ON THE FORUM FROM PAT AND JAIJUN. IT'S BASED ON A FLOWGRAPH THAT VINH MADE A WHILE AGO...

IT'S A BIT OF A STRANGE ONE, AS THE COORDINATE SYSTEM BETWEEN GLOBAL, THE PARENT AND THE CHILD IS A LITTLE DIFFICULT TO FIGURE OUT.

WHILE I'M NOT SURE I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND IT THE FLOWGRAPH BELOW WORKS TO ACHIEVE WHAT I THINK PAT WAS AFTER.


THE BOTTOM PART RELATES TO MOVING THE PARENT ENTITY ... AND THE TOP PART SHOWS HOW I'M MOVING THE CHILD ENTITY UP AND DOWN 10 METERS. THE CURRENT POSITION OUTPUT AND LOGIC ONCE NODES WORK TOGETHER TO CAPTURE THE LOCAL COORDINATES OF THE CHILD ENTITY TO SET THE DESTINATION.

USEFUL FLOWGRAPH VERSION 2.0



HI ALL,

THE STUDENTS WHO ATTENDED THE LECTURE WHERE THIS WAS DEMONSTRATED WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS.

THE LAST TIME I POSTED THIS THE IMAGE WAS TOO SMALL TO READ ... THE THUMBNAIL SHOULD HAVE LOADED A LARGER VERSION, THIS ONE WORKS FINE.

IT LOOKS LIKE DRAGGING THE IMAGE AROUND IN THE COMPOSE WINDOW IN BLOGGER CAN HAVE THIS EFFECT. THE SOLUTION IS TO MOVE THE CODE IN THE "EDIT HTML" TAG ... SEE THIS WEBSITE FOR ADVICE ... http://bloggerfordummies.blogspot.com/2008/03/clicking-on-image-does-not-enlarge.html

I USED THIS ADVICE TO PLACE THE IMAGE AT THE END OF THE POST AS WELL. TO SUMMARISE ... I ADDED THE IMAGE USEING THE ADD IMAGE BUTTON IN THE COMPOSE WINDOW, THEN WENT INTO THE EDIT HTML WINDOW AND COPIED ALL THE HTML TEXT ASSOCIATED WITH THAT IMAGE, THEN COPIED AND PASTED IT TO WHERE I WANTED IT IN THE POST (STILL IN THE EDIT HTML WINDOW). IT LOOKS LIKE A GOOD WAY TO MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE THAT YOUR IMAGES GET BIGGER WHEN WE CLICK ON THEM ... WHICH IS IMPORTANT AS YOU'VE SPENT SO MUCH TIME MAKING THEM.

EXTRA TUTORIAL SESSIONS!

HI ALL,

IN RESPONSE TO A REQUEST FROM YOUR STUDENT REPS ANN QUINLAN, OUR ARCHITECTURE PROGRAM HEAD, HAS AGREED TO SUPPORT TWO TUTORS FOR AN EXTRA TUTORIAL SESSION THIS FRIDAY.

THE EXTRAS SESSION WILL GO FROM 6-8PM ON FRIDAY 25TH OF MARCH AND ALL STUDENTS WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH GOOGLE SKETCHUP ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND.

THE TUTORIAL WILL BE RUN IN COMPUTER LAB'S 1 AND 2, ON LEVEL 2, RED CENTRE WEST WING.

ANN HAS ALSO AGREED TO 3 MORE SESSIONS ON TUESDAY EVENINGS FROM 6-8PM.

IF THERE IS GOOD DEMAND OVER THE FIRST 4 WEEKS WE MAY BE ABLE TO EXTEND THE INITIATIVE OVER THE WHOLE SEMESTER...

NOTES FROM THE FIRST STUDENT REP MEETING

HI ALL,

FIRSTLY, THANKS TO ALL THE STUDENT REPS FOR VOLUNTEERING.

YESTERDAY WE HAD OUR FIRST MEETING AND A FEW ISSUES WERE RAISED, I'LL LIST THEM BELOW FOR CLARITY.

1. SOME STUDENTS ARE FEELING LIMITED BY THEIR ABILITY TO USE GOOGLE SKETCHUP. WE SPOKE ABOUT TECHNIQUES FOR TAKING ADVANTAGE OF A LIMITED TOOL PALLET AND JEREMY AND I CLARIFIED THAT IT WAS POSSIBLE FOR A STUDENT TO GET A HIGH DISTINCTION FOR THE COURSE USING ONLY A FEW SIMPLE TOOLS. WE RESOLVED THAT I WOULD SHOW SOME EXAMPLES OF THIS IN NEXT WEEKS LECTURE AND TO SUPPLEMENT THIS WE WOULD ORGANISE SKILLS DROP-IN SESSIONS FOR AN HOUR EACH STUDIO CLASS. THESE WILL RUN FROM 4-5PM IN THE 5TH FLOOR FORUM SPACE. THEY ARE NOT COMPULSORY, BUT IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE WITH SKETCHUP (OR OTHER SOFTWARE LATER IN THE SESSION) JEREMY OR I WILL BE THERE TO HELP.

2. THE NEXT ISSUE RELATED TO THE LENGTH AND INTENSITY OF THE STUDIO SESSION. 4 HOURS IS A LONG TIME. JEREMY AND I WILL REMIND THE TUTORS THAT THEY SHOULD ENSURE YOU HAVE AT LEAST ONE BREAK DURING THE FOUR HOUR SESSION. WE ALL THOUGHT THAT IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO GET OUTSIDE AND GET SOME FRESH AIR ... BUT THAT'S UP TO YOU. ANOTHER GOOD OPTION WOULD BE TO TAKE A LOOK AROUND SOME OF THE OTHER STUDIO GROUPS.

3. NOT RELATED DIRECTLY TO THIS COURSE, BUT A FEW STUDENTS ARE HAVING TROUBLE GETTING FROM ONE LECTURE TO ANOTHER BECAUSE THE LECTURES ARE RUNNING OVER TIME. JEREMY AND I SAID WE WOULD BRING THIS ISSUE TO THE ATTENTION OF ANN QUINLAN, THE HEAD OF PROGRAM, WHO WOULD BE ABLE TO RAISE IT WITH THE STAFF ACROSS THE PROGRAM.

4. ONE REP RAISED THE ISSUE OF A NIGHT TIME TUTORIAL SESSION. WHILE THIS IS TO LATE TO IMPLEMENT THIS SESSION, JEREMY AND I SAID WE WOULD ALSO RAISE THAT WITH ANN QUINLAN. WE SAID WE WOULD ALSO ASK ABOUT AN ADDITIONAL TUTORIAL SESSION, TO RUN IN THE EVENING, THAT MIGHT HELP PEOPLE THAT WERE STRUGGLING. IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT IF THIS HAPPENED IT WOULD BE IN ADDITION TO YOUR SCHEDULED TUTORIAL SESSION AND NOT INTENDED TO REPLACE IT. WE'LL LET YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS.

5. THE FINAL ISSUE RELATED TO AUDIO QUALITY IN THE LECTURE ... IT SEEMS LIKE THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE VOLUME IN THE CENTER OF THE LECTURE THEATRE COMPARED TO THE EDGES. I'LL TEST OUT SOME CHANGES NEXT WEEK TO SEE IF IT HELPS.

SONA FIRST YEAR DESIGN COMPETITION

AT NEXT WEEKS LECTURE A SONA REPRESENTATIVE WILL INVITE YOU ALL TO TAKE PART IN A FIRST YEAR DESIGN COMPETITION TO CREATE A 60 SECOND SHORT FILM ON ARCHITECTURE.

SONA IS THE STUDENT ORGANISED NETWORK OF ARCHITECTS, AND IS AFFILIATED WITH THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS.

IT'S A ONE DAY COMPITITION AND OFFERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO COMPETE AGAINST SYDNEY'S BEST STUDENTS AS WELL AS MEET STUDENTS FROM SYDNEY UNIVERSITY AND UTS.

IT'S ALSO GOOD PRACTICE FOR ARCH1101.
